After a long winter throughout the entire continent, Europe is now seeing the first signs of spring. Here in Sofia this makes for trees full of red and white bracelets and tassels. As a shy school girl explained to me in English, the bravest one pushed forward by her friends, this is called martenitsa, or Baba Marta after the mythical figure who brings spring time. Bulgarians gift and receive the bracelets before spring and when they see either a stork or a blossoming tree they tie the red and white token in a blooming tree for good luck.
