Riding into Slovakia (and then soon into Bratislava, the capital) was really a very nice biking experience. Wide car-free lanes on dykes and through forests make for a perfect bicycle and pedestrian freeway into the 'little big city', as Bratislava has named itself. I enter the old city over the UFO bridge which houses a rotating restaurant just like Seattle's space needle.
The historic downtown is like a little Slovakian Disneyland, busy with large Asian tour groups and guys in folkloric clothing trying to lure tourists into 'traditional' restaurants. Outside the center there is not all that much of interest. Combine this with a bad couch surfing experience and the highlights of my stay being the pickle lady(*) and the mailbox design, and I know it is time to move on!
(*) Having a supply of pickled cabbage with hot peppers is a great idea for snacking on long bike rides, I found out. And you see in the picture how you can buy big bottles of sauerkraut juice for good health?
Hoi Heidi, kijk steeds weer uit naar je berichtjes en vind je een echte bikkel! Is het een beetje fietsweer? Hier niet, het regent de hele dag.....
