CONTINENTAL CROATIA

I ride through just a very small corner of the upper part of Croatia, or Continental Croatia as they call it here. Apparently only recovering slowly from the war, it feels a bit stuck in time indeed. Shocking artillery holes, like in the water tower in Vukovar in the photo below, are scarring the villages. There are also protected swamp lands that are biker's paradise, beautifully preserved baroque towns, and mind-blowing brick wine cellars from the 1500s such as the two-story deep cellar that I toured, ageing wines in bottles and 10,000 liter (!) barrels of Slavonian oak. Of course followed by a tasting of wines made with local grape varieties Francovka and Grasevina.

Very modest tasting amounts for me as the thermometer reads 34 degrees and I need to bike some 100km to Hungary.
